After graduating from the UT Austin Business School last year, I recently started work as a Systems Analyst for Enterprise Products Partners (energy company) here in Houston. In my spare time I'm a Computers Advisor at Epinions.com, a site where you can get paid to write product reviews, articles, and buying guides on just about any topic imaginable. It's one of the best sites on the web and definitely worth checking out. See below for more on Epinions.com
The above photo is of me and my girlfriend Nira taken at an ABSA boat dance. Isn't she cute!
I've written 38 reviews and articles for Epinions, mostly computer hardware reviews and hardware buying guides. Usually I'll write a new one about once a week. Below are some of my most popular Epinions (all links will automatically open in their own windows):
The Voodoo 5 5500: Debunking Myths
My most widely-read review BY FAR, with almost three times as many reads as any other review! And to be honest, it's not even a "review", per-se, but rather a look at the rampant rumors circulating about this product, and an evaluation of what's true and what's hype.
3dfx vs. nVidia: Soon it may be 3dfx AND nVidia
A merger between the two 3D accelerator giants may seem unthinkable, but it might not be as far off as you think. Read here to see how the unthinkable may become a reality.
All Aboard: In Defense of Integrated Components
Integrated PC parts have always been every computer enthusiast's worst nightmare. But is their reputation justified? This review discusses the many misconceptions around integrated components, and why your PC is already more "integrated" than you think.
The WORST Computer Epinion Ever Written
If you'd like to read the single worst epinion you've ever seen, look no further. This is it. (NOTE: Please read the review in full before rating!)
RAM: Time to Stock Up!
If you're in the market for some extra RAM, now is the time to buy. And I don't mean this year, or even this month; I mean this week. Read this article to see why there might not be such a great buying opportunity for a long time to come.
Buying RAM: Is More Better?
When it comes to your computer's RAM, you can just never have enough, right? Not necessarily. This article takes a look at how to determine how much RAM you really need, and whether it's true that when it comes to RAM, "more is better!"
"The Gamer Stereotype": Building Your Own Gamer's PC
This article discusses the validity of the "Gamer Stereotype" and details my experience with building my own Duron 650 system (overclocked to 900 mhz, of course)
Buying a Mid-Range PC: Throw That Conventional Wisdom Out the Window!
Ever hear the saying that "You should always buy the most powerful computer you can afford, because they become obsolete so fast"? How about the saying that "a PC is only as fast as its weakest component"? Read this article to see why both snippets of conventional wisdom are DEAD wrong.
The IBM Deskstar 75GXP: The Best Hard Drive Available
Interested in replacing that 2 gigabyte clunker with a brand new, state-of-the-art hard drive? Then look no further than the IBM Deskstar. Check out this review to see why buying anything else is a big mistake.
AMD's PowerNow Technology: A Must Have for Laptop DVD
If you're looking for a new laptop PC and you want to watch DVD's on it, or if you just want the most battery life possible without sacrificing performance, PowerNow-enabled laptops with AMD processors are definitely worth checking out. Read this review to find out why it's the best power-conserving technology for laptops available.
SETI, or the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, is a scientific effort aiming to determine if there is intelligent life out in the universe. The "SETI@Home Project" is your chance to take an active part in the search for alien life, by using your computer's spare processing power to help analyze signals detected by the Arecibo Radio Telescope in New Mexico. Anybody can join, and the SETI@Home client simply runs when your PC is not in use. It's also a VERY cool looking screensaver.
I'm currently part of the University of Texas "team", which anybody can join. I am currently ranked 7th overall, with 2179 work units completed and 3.93 years worth of processing time contributed! In case you're wondering how I was able to rack up 3.93 years of time when the project only started about a year ago, SETI@Home lets you use multiple PC's simultaneously to maximize your data-crunching capabilities.
